Exhibition “Papua New Guinea – A Look at Contemporary Painting”, May 12th-June 15th, ART Gallery 🎨

🔹 The exhibition “Papua New Guinea – A Look at Contemporary Painting” will be officially opened on Tuesday, May 12, at the ART Gallery at 8:00 PM.

🔹 The selected works are being presented in Podgorica for the first time and come from the private collection of the Head of the Democratization Programme at the OSCE Mission, Mr. Bernd Burwitz, with a focus on more recent works.

In his reflection, Mr. Bernd Burwitz states:

“One of the key characteristics of contemporary art in Papua New Guinea is the combination of traditional visual languages with modern themes and materials. Artists draw on motifs such as ancestral symbols, totemic animals, and ceremonial ornaments, while at the same time addressing contemporary issues of identity, urbanization, and social change. Their works often reflect everyday life, the local environment, and the evolving realities of a newly independent state.

This exhibition encompasses a wide range of artists from different generations: from second-generation representatives active since the 1990s, such as Apa Hugo, John Bom, and John Danger, to the younger generation including Andrew Kayanu, Prosper Haure, and Noa Kavatala “Genosam”. Together, these works provide valuable insight into the continuity and development of contemporary artistic practice in Papua New Guinea.”

✨ Welcome!
