Retrospective exhibition by Šejla Kamerić “Firstborn”

Šejla Kamerić’s exhibition “Firstborn” will be opened on September 12th in Petrović Castle and Perjanički Dom.

Šejla Kamerić is a contemporary artist from Bosnia and Herzegovina recognized for her interdisciplinary approach that includes film, photography, objects, drawings and installations. Dealing with topics arising from non-linear historical narratives, as well as personal histories, Kamerić focuses on the politics of memory, ways of resistance in human life and the consequent peculiarities of women’s struggle. Especially valued for the social strength that comes from daringintimacy, her works emphasize empathy as a basic creative mechanism. With his work, Kamerić warns about the areas of power, creating strong alternatives to them. Her works are in prestigious international collections, including TATE Modern; MACBA Barcelona; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul and others.

Kamerić participated in significant group exhibitions and exhibited independently in numerous international institutions, and her films were shown at over 40 international film festivals. Her work Bosnian Girl (2003) is considered one of the most significant works of contemporary art in the region and is part of the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro. Her most recent work, an installation in public space entitled “Cease”, curated by Giulia Foscari, was installed in Campo Santo Stefano in Venice during the first weeks of the 60th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. Kamerić is the recipient of the ECF Routes Princess Margriet Award for Cultural Diversity, as well as the DAAD-Berlin Artist Residency Fellowship, the ONFURI Award at the National Gallery of Art in Tirana, and the Freedom Award of the International Peace Center in Sarajevo.
