In 1992, the same year they unfurled twenty-two square meters of black canvas in the center of Moscow as part of the performance “Black Square on Red Square,” the Slovenian collective IRWIN initiated the transformation of Neue Slowenische Kunst into the NSK State in Time. The manifesto proclaiming this transformation describes the State as an infinite political entity without physical boundaries; an abstract organism, a suprematist body “eternally inspired by the moment of grace of its own becoming,” which exists “in time, while simultaneously transcending it.” In my presentation, I will bring IRWIN’s ecstatic inauguration into relation with some of the forces reshaping contemporary statehood today.
