On Friday, June 12th, starting at 8:00 PM, a concert by the “Bassonique” Quartet will be held in the Chamber Hall of the Music Center of Montenegro.
Prominent musicians – violinist Luka Perazić, violist Uroš Lapčević, cellist Milan Ninković, and bassoonist Georgi Kalajdžiev – will perform works by François Devienne: Quartets Op. 73, Nos. 1, 2, and 3.
Little is known about the life and education of François Devienne (1759–1803) before his arrival in Paris in 1779, when he became a bassoonist in the Paris Opera Orchestra. A year later, Devienne entered the service of Cardinal de Rohan, a highly influential aristocrat.
Although the majority of Devienne’s oeuvre is dedicated to compositions for the instruments he played himself – the flute and the bassoon – his works also include several comic operas that were highly popular during the revolutionary period (“Les Visitandines”, “Les Comédiens ambulants”, “Le Mariage secret”…).
The Quartets Opus 73 were published in 1798 by the Érard publishing house in Paris and were dedicated to Devienne’s friend, the bassoonist François-Joseph Garnier. They are characterized, among other things, by the prominent role of the bassoon and, unlike many works of that era, highly independent and musically equal string parts.
