Classic in the Garden: Lecture “Ancient Cults in the Territory of Montenegro”🎓September 19th, Mediterranean Garden - Gorica Hill 🌳

Ancient cults, temples and cult sites, during the pre-Roman and Roman periods, shaped the territory of present-day Montenegro from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD — a full 1,300 years — when members of various Illyrian tribes inhabited this area.

A profound and systematic insight into this period of our past, through the cataloguing of archaeological artefacts according to the cults with which they are directly or indirectly associated, was provided by Dr Dejan Gazivoda in his monograph “Ancient Cults in the Territory of Montenegro”, published by the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU) in 2023.

A lecture for all those interested in the ancient history and archaeology of Montenegro.

Dr Dejan Gazivoda, archaeologist, research advisor, senior conservator and curator, graduated in 2004 from the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. He received his master’s degree in 2008 and his PhD in 2015 from the same department.

He has led 46 archaeological campaigns in Montenegro, including excavations and research at Risan, Žabljak Crnojevića, Vezačka Cave, Seocka Cave, Spuž, and in the Montenegrin underwater archaeological heritage.

He has been a member of the Archaeology Committee of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2010 and has served as its president since 2021.

He has published thirty scholarly and scientific papers in international and domestic academic journals, eight of them co-authored. He is the author of the monograph “Ancient Cults in the Territory of Montenegro”, published by CANU in 2023. He is also the editor-in-chief and responsible editor of the “Encyclopaedia of Archaeology of Montenegro”, published by CANU in 2025, and the editor-in-chief and responsible editor of the bilingual publication “Archaeological Heritage of Montenegro”, published by the Ministry of Culture and Media in 2026.
