Sara Shaverdi is the first woman ever elected to her village council in rural Iran. Her promises – curbing child marriage, providing education for girls, and finally bringing the long-awaited gas connection to the village. These are all goals that are not easy to achieve in a country where women face systemic inequality and many decisions are made in an undemocratic manner.
