There is a terrifying claustrophobia of the spirit that arises when you realize you are “determined”—by birth, by father, by mother, by culture, by everything over which you have absolutely no control. A “straw in the whirlwind.”
This sense of a “boot on the head,” of a lack of freedom to choose who you are and what you are, has been felt for millennia—from the ancient Greeks to modern times, where some call it fate… Today, molecular biology harshly and precisely serves us the reality and truth about ourselves. We are merely chromosomal “variations” of our ancestors.
It is said that the Roma people wander the world, fleeing a curse. According to legend, their ancestor struck Christ with a spear while He was dying on the cross. An entire people, in flight from themselves—crossing continents, escaping their own identity.
It is enough to pause for a moment to realize that you are a “pure, unadulterated Glembay.” How banal this world is—both banal and tremendously creative at the same time.
But tragic, brother. Too tragic. And perhaps that is why it is beautiful.
